Sankofa Journeys Speaker Series presents Ruth Mathiang
The African Arts Institute (AAI) is proud to announce the next webinar of its Sankofa Journeys Speaker Series, dedicated to showcasing African artists, scholars, and cultural practitioners shaping African arts today. Every session, we highlight creative voices whose work preserves, reimagines, and celebrates African identity across disciplines.
February webinar will be taking place on Sunday, February 8, at 6:00 PM ET on Zoom and will feature South Sudanese singer and songwriter Ruth Mathiang.
Born in South Sudan, Ruth Mathiang uses her voice and artistry to advocate for social justice, equality, and peace. Through her original music, she addresses pressing social issues with depth and compassion.
Mathiang has performed for non-profit organizations working across Africa in areas including human rights, women’s and children’s advocacy, primary health care, and community development, as well as on major stages such as Harbourfront Centre and AfroFest. Influenced by musical icons including the late Miriam Makeba and Tracy Chapman, she performs in Arabic, Kiswahili, and English. Her elegant, melodic voice reflects warmth and resilience, and her music blends traditional African pop with elements of hip hop, afro beat, jazz, and reggae.
The African Arts Institute invites all community members, artists, educators, and cultural enthusiasts to join us for this dynamic session.
